Your curated wrap-up from The Southeast Asia Desk.
Hello and welcome back,
This week, Southeast Asia is not waiting for the world to define its future. It is building it — avatar by avatar, gigawatt by gigawatt, and story by story. The region’s creative professionals are turning virtual personas into legitimate careers.
Indonesia is betting trillions on solar, biodiesel, and nuclear. ASEAN is forging a unified climate voice ahead of COP31. And a 1,100-year-old shipwreck is teaching us that even the naming of history is a form of statecraft.
Here is your news in focus.
🎭 Avatar Economy: How Southeast Asia built a multi-billion-dollar VTuber hub
The global VTuber market is projected to grow from $3.8 billion in 2025 to over $14.6 billion by 2034. Southeast Asia is a top contributor, led by Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Hololive and Nijisanji established Indonesian branches years before their English counterparts, driven by youthful demographics and expanding smartphone penetration.

The fourth Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) in Jakarta, held 6–7 October 2026, brought together around 200 speakers and more than 7,000 participants. The stakes are enormous: Indonesia consumes around 1.6 million barrels of oil per day but produces only 600,000, leaving it dependent on imports of around 1 million barrels daily.

COP31 will be held in Antalya, Türkiye, from 9 to 20 November 2026. ASEAN is preparing a joint statement, signalled by ASEAN Climate Week in Taguig City from 27 April to 1 May. 🖲️ AI is changing Asia Pacific’s digital infrastructure: Can Southeast Asia keep up?
For years, digital transformation focused on connecting people to the world — expanding broadband, improving mobile networks, bringing services online. AI is changing that. ESCAP calls the new paradigm “AI-native network infrastructure”. The shift is from connect → transmit → access to connect → compute → process → analyse → respond.

⚓ Belitung shipwreck and the future of ASEAN unity
Discovered in 1998, the Belitung wreck was an Arab dhow, the first of its kind ever found according to UNESCO’s Silk Roads Programme. Its hull, stitched with coconut fibre rather than iron nails, carried over 60,000 artefacts, including Tang Dynasty ceramics, gold and silver vessels, Persian green bowls, resin, metals, and spices. It provided the first physical evidence of a direct maritime trade route between the Abbasid Caliphate and the kingdoms of Persia and China.
☁️🏔️ Weekend Brew: Chasing the clouds — 5 highland destinations in Southeast Asia

✍️ Closing Note
This week’s stories share a single thread: Southeast Asia is building the architecture of its own future.
Virtual creators are turning avatars into legitimate careers. Digital sovereignty is being pursued without isolation. The world is financing, legislating, and implementing a $3.8 trillion energy transition. ASEAN is preparing to speak with one voice at COP31.
AI infrastructure is being deployed with a wary eye on who gets left behind. A shipwreck is being reclaimed, renamed, and re-narrated. And the region’s soulful women artists are proving that great music doesn’t need a passport.
The region is not waiting to be defined. It is doing the defining.
Thank you for reading.
✨ Stories to linger over, one week at a time.
