ASEAN has launched several long-term initiatives to strengthen regional cooperation, including:
ASEAN External Relations: Dialogue partnerships with 11 countries since 1974; sectoral and development partnerships with 16 others.
Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC): Signed in 1976, marking its 50th anniversary in 2026; 58 countries have joined as of October 2025.
ASEAN Connectivity: Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025 adopted in September 2016 to strengthen physical, institutional, and people-to-people links.

🎉 50th Anniversary of TAC
ASEAN reaffirmed the TAC as the foundation of peaceful relations, mutual trust, and regional stability. New guidelines on engagement with High Contracting Parties were welcomed. Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Sweden will accede on 24 July 2026.
🤝 New Dialogue Partners
ASEAN admitted Türkiye as its 12th Dialogue Partner, and Germany and Qatar as Sectoral Dialogue Partners, effective 21 July 2026. Cooperation will focus on community development, education, humanitarian assistance, connectivity, crisis response, food security, energy security, and supply chain resilience.
🇹🇱 Timor-Leste Role

ASEAN is expanding Timor-Leste’s role following its accession as the 11th member on 26 December 2025. The country has been appointed coordinator for the ASEAN–New Zealand Dialogue Partnership (2027–2030) and has expressed readiness to serve as ASEAN Chair in 2029. ASEAN leaders will decide on the proposal at the 49th ASEAN Summit in November.

🌊 South China Sea Dispute

ASEAN welcomed significant progress in COC negotiations and reaffirmed commitment to finalise the Code of Conduct this year. Both sides called for mutual trust, self-restraint, and full implementation of the DOC until the COC is finalised. All parties reaffirmed the importance of peace, stability, and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea.
🇲🇲 Myanmar Conflict
ASEAN expressed deep concern over the conflict and humanitarian situation in Myanmar, reaffirming commitment to the Five-Point Consensus. The bloc urged an immediate end to violence, protection of civilians, and unhindered humanitarian access. Member states commended Special Envoy Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro for her engagement with Myanmar stakeholders and international partners since January 2026.
🇹🇭🇰🇭 Thailand-Cambodia Border Conflict
ASEAN welcomed the ceasefire commitment and reaffirmed support for its full implementation. The bloc emphasised the role of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), coordinated by the Philippines, in monitoring the ceasefire. ASEAN also welcomed the trilateral meeting between Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines during the 48th ASEAN Summit on 7 May 2026, which highlighted the importance of dialogue in rebuilding trust.
🇰🇵🇰🇷 Korean Peninsula Tension
ASEAN expressed concern over developments on the Korean Peninsula and stressed the importance of peaceful dialogue for lasting peace, stability, and denuclearisation. The bloc urged North Korea to comply with UN Security Council resolutions, engage in dialogue, and help de-escalate tensions. ASEAN reaffirmed its readiness to support peaceful dialogue through ASEAN-led platforms.
☢️ Nuclear Weapon-Free Region
ASEAN committed to preserving Southeast Asia as a nuclear weapon-free zone, in line with the ASEAN Charter and the SEANWFZ Treaty. The bloc commended ASEANTOM for strengthening regional cooperation on nuclear safety and emergency preparedness, and will ensure the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear energy in accordance with IAEA standards.
🇷🇺🇺🇦 Russia-Ukraine War
ASEAN reaffirmed respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling for an immediate ceasefire and inclusive dialogue in line with the UN Charter. The bloc also called for unhindered humanitarian access and the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel.
🇺🇸🇮🇱🇮🇷 Middle East War
ASEAN expressed concern over Middle East developments, urging all parties to respect sovereignty, exercise restraint, pursue diplomatic solutions, and protect civilians. The bloc reaffirmed the importance of maritime safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. ASEAN also reiterated its support for a two-state solution to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in line with international law and UN resolutions.
