Your curated wrap-up from The Southeast Asia Desk.

Hello and welcome back,

This week’s stories reveal a region asserting itself on multiple fronts—through culture, sport, diplomacy, and the battle for information integrity. Southeast Asia is no longer just a consumer of global trends; it is becoming a creator of them, from horror games that export folklore to Hollywood villains who bring pencak silat to the world stage.

Yet alongside these cultural victories come sobering realities: AI-powered cyberattacks are targeting human vulnerabilities, the climate clock is ticking toward 2030, and the geopolitical landscape is shifting as Australia deepens its role as a regional counterweight.

Here is your news in focus:

🤖 Mimecast: AI is rewriting cybersecurity, and humans are becoming the main target

The latest State of Human Risk 2026 report by Mimecast reveals that 65% of surveyed organisations in Singapore and Australia believe an AI-enabled cyberattack is inevitable within the next 12 months, while 60% admit they are not fully prepared to defend against AI-driven threats.

📝 ASEAN Media Forum 2026: Why independent journalism matters for the region’s future

The 10th ASEAN Media Forum, held in Manila on 29–30 July, brought together 35 journalists from all 11 member states, including Timor-Leste participants for the first time. ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn described the media as an “indispensable partner” in connecting regional policies with citizens’ everyday lives.

🌏 From promises to ground action: Inside the 2026 Indonesia Net-Zero Summit

The Indonesia Net-Zero Summit (INZS) 2026, hosted by FPCI on 1 August, brought together over 60 speakers under the theme “It’s Time to Deliver!” The math is stark: humanity has a remaining carbon budget of only 200 gigatons to stay within 1.5°C—less than five years at current emission rates.

🏸 Tchoukball gains ground in Southeast Asia as Singapore leads regional charge

Singapore’s men’s team won gold and its women’s team took bronze at the Asia Pacific Tchoukball Championships (APTC 2026) on 9 July. The sport, invented in the 1970s by a Swiss biologist, uses a trampoline-like goal post and emphasises safety and inclusivity—mixed-gender and mixed-age participation is possible.

🇮🇩 Hollywood meets Southeast Asia: Agnez Mo brings Indonesia’s pencak silat to Comic-Con

At San Diego Comic-Con on 26 July, Agnez Mo and Anggun walked out as part of the official panel for “Reacher” Season 4, playing mother-daughter antagonists Lila and Amisha Hoth. What makes this casting significant: Agnez went through the full audition process without shortcuts, and she brought pencak silat—the Indonesian traditional martial art—into her fight choreography.

Fines, bans, and viral friction: The cost of bad travel etiquette

Recent incidents, from an exclusionary run club in Bali to disruptive tourists in Bangkok, reveal the fragility and rapid repair of cross-cultural goodwill. Travel is a mutual exchange, not a transaction—adapting to local norms is the highest form of respect.

🎙️ The Dispatch Podcast: Press Start, If You Dare...

This week’s podcast explores how games like Indonesia’s DreadOut (2.5 million+ downloads), Thailand’s Home Sweet Home, Vietnam’s The Scourge, the Philippines’ Hapunan (200,000+ downloads on Itch.io), and Malaysia’s Yan: Parasomnia are introducing global players to local folklore. Instead of borrowing Western monsters, these games draw from Kuntilanak, Pocong, Pret, and other spirits deeply rooted in regional beliefs.

🇦🇺🤝 The new geopolitics of Southeast Asia: Why Australia matters more to ASEAN now

In the wake of the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict (2025) and the US-Israel-Iran war (2026), ASEAN faces unprecedented pressure. Australia’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN (2023), the establishment of the Australia-ASEAN Centre, and the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (2026) signal Canberra’s growing seriousness.
