Your curated wrap-up from The Southeast Asia Desk.

Hello and welcome back,

This week, Southeast Asia reminds us that its influence is not only political or economic—it is deeply cultural and increasingly creative.

The region is shaping how people shop online, how stories are told on screen, how communities come together over a shared meal, and how heritage is worn in everyday life.

🛡️ Indonesia-China strategic dialogue strengthens bilateral defence ties

Highlighting a commitment to regional stability, the latest Indonesia-China Strategic Dialogue focused on expanding joint military exercises, maritime security cooperation, and defence technology transfers. The deepening partnership underscores Jakarta’s non-aligned stance as it navigates complex regional dynamics while securing key security interests with Beijing.

🤖 AI helps Southeast Asians shop, but human trust still closes the sale

The Singapore-based market research company Cube Asia, in partnership with impact.com and Dentsu, released its report “E-commerce Influencer & Affiliate Marketing in Southeast Asia 2026” on 23 July. The report highlights how generative AI is changing consumer behaviour, particularly in how consumers discover and compare products on online marketplaces.

🌿 One year of The Southeast Asia Desk: From a small experiment to a common future

The Southeast Asia Desk celebrates its first anniversary, marking a year of patient, independent, regionally grounded journalism. The publication’s growth is becoming less dependent on social media algorithms. People are searching for issues. They are finding our work. And some are returning directly.

🍽️ Pass the plate! Inside ASEAN Day Food Festival

ASEAN’s 59th anniversary celebration brought diverse communities together through one universal language: food. Under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together”, the ASEAN Day Food Festival put people at the heart of regional cooperation. The event brought together ASEAN Member States and external partners, reflecting the bloc’s broad network of relationships and demonstrating how food can create connections beyond formal meetings and political dialogue.

🎶 Beyond the beat: How Southeast Asia is reinventing music festivals

Southeast Asia has a highly diverse music festival ecosystem, with each festival offering different experiences and identities. From large-scale festivals spanning various genres to those that combine music with art, culture, nature, and community experiences, music festivals in Southeast Asia showcase the diverse and creative potential of the region's music industry.

🎬 Southeast Asia’s new shot-callers of global action movies

Southeast Asia’s action stars are no longer just knocking on global cinema’s door—they are deciding who walks through it. Iko Uwais and Tony Jaa didn’t attend the 7th Jackie Chan International Action Film Week in Harbin as guests. They attended as judges. It’s a quiet message with a loud meaning: Southeast Asia’s action stars are now shaping the next generation of action talent.

🎙️ The Dispatch Podcast: Wearing Our Heritage — How Southeast Asia Is Redefining Traditional Fashion

Traditional clothing is not just clothing. Across Southeast Asia, textiles tell stories about where people come from, reflecting community, identity, history, and even social status.

This week’s podcast explores how Southeast Asian designers are transforming ceremonial-wear textiles into everyday fashion. Indonesian batik, recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, is more than just a beautiful fabric—the techniques, patterns, symbolism, and the knowledge behind making it are all part of the heritage.
