"Rohingya children in Aceh refugee camps without access to classrooms or books, as women leaders push for regional action." — In Aceh’s refugee camps, Rohingya children grow up without classrooms or books. (Rohingya Women Collaborative)

The Main Takeaway 🚨

On September 4–7, 2025, the women-led refugee movement Rohingya Maìyafuìnor Collaborative Network (RMCN) ✊👩‍🦱 held meetings with policymakers and advocacy partners 🏛️🤝 in Bangkok, Thailand 🇹🇭 to spotlight escalating violence 🔥 and aid cuts ✂️ impacting Rohingya survivors of genocide 🕊️.
In addition to youth dialogues in Chiang Mai, Thailand 🇹🇭👥, a four-part series of missions was held starting August 25, 2025 🗓️ — including media briefings 📰 and visits to camps in Banda Aceh, Lhokseumawe, and Pidie, Aceh, Indonesia 🇮🇩🏕️.

Why Is It on Our Radar? 👀

Eight years after the Rohingya genocide, over 1.4 million refugees in Bangladesh 🇧🇩 face food shortages 🍽️, no access to education 📚❌, and an uncertain future ⏳.
Meanwhile, in Myanmar 🇲🇲 more women and children flee by sea 🚤, only to encounter detention 🚔, hate 💔, and deportation threats 🚫 upon arrival in Southeast Asia. 🌏

What’s at Stake ⚠️

With aid drying up 💸 and refugee numbers rising 📈, Southeast Asia faces growing instability 🌏⚠️ if solutions stall.
Without sustained support, refugees’ suffering will deepen 😔, burdening host nations 🏛️ and sparking social tensions 🔥.

The Big Picture 🌏

The Rohingya crisis began as persecution in Myanmar escalated to mass violence in 2017 🔥, forcing over a million into overcrowded camps, mostly in Bangladesh 🇧🇩.
The RMCN mission ✊ challenges the narrative that Rohingya are burdens, instead highlighting their strength, culture, and contributions 🌏.
Their demands for ASEAN and the International Community:
- Open the doors 🚪 to education, healthcare, and work 📚🏥💼
- Protect, don’t deport 🛡️🚫
- Cut ties ✂️ with Myanmar military-owned companies and cronies 💰

Why This Hits Home 🏠

According to UNHCR, Southeast Asian countries that have received an influx of Myanmar Rohingya refugees include:

Malaysia 🇲🇾: 185,300 refugees 👥
Indonesia 🇮🇩: around 2,700 registered refugees 📝
Thailand 🇹🇭: approximately 81,000 registered refugees 📊

The Regional Stakes 🌐

Other ASEAN members like the Philippines 🇵🇭 and Cambodia 🇰🇭 host smaller numbers of refugees, but have been less significant destinations for Rohingya compared to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
Southeast Asia faces a tipping point ⚠️ — failure to act could worsen displacement 🚶‍♀️, foster hatred 💔, and destabilize the region 🌏.

Beyond the Headlines 📚

RMCN’s mission ✊ also features a film screening 🎬 and showcases refugee and host community art 🎨, proving that creativity thrives despite displacement 🌱.
